Mountain Reporter Network - Marsh Fork Elementary School

summary:
Marsh Fork Elementary School and Coal Concerns
The Mountain Reporter Network (MRN) is a digital storytelling and community journalism project taking place in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky and West Virginia, a region that has historically produced much of the coal mined in the United States.

The MRN has recently published a story on Marsh Fork Elementary School in Raleigh County, West Virgina where concerned parents worry abouth the coal dust and the chemicals used in processing coal adjacent to the school. The school in Sundial is located directly below the 2.8 billion gallon shumate sludge impoundment on Cherry Pond Mountain.

The MRN is using PlaceStories in a effort to develop an alternative, community-based media network that shares the stories of local citizens who are living with the true costs of coal and fighting for community survival.

The MRN is coordinated by the Center for Rural Strategies and Feral Arts in partnership with Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, Coal River Mountain Watch, and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (all grassroots environmental organizations), and the media center/community radio station Appalshop/WMMT.
